i have a 2 month old and i was trying to explain to my husband how it’s so stressful wanting to document everything, but also be present, but also make scrapbooks, but also fill out the baby book, but also make sure to print the iphone photos out and store them, but also take posed monthly photos with my baby, but also print them and hang them on the wall. the list goes on and on and on.
Loved this article! I’m constantly moved by the shared experiences of mamas everywhere. Our situations are so unique and yet so universal. Yes to all of this! I take my job as chief memory keeper very seriously and the work it takes is so hard to quantify and explain to others. At this point, like you, I have some systems in place that help take some of the weight off, but it’s still a big job. Yet, when I see my kids sitting together on the couch gathered around an album reliving a recent trip, it reminds me that it’s all worth it.
I loved reading this. I often get very overwhelmed by the amount of photos I have on my phone and on the cloud. I have made photo books in the past, but I try not to stress myself out about that anymore. Instead, I add my favorite photos to my digital photo frame. This lets me see all photos from over the years -- and my kids love looking at the frame, too. I'll still make books once in a while, but this really helped alleviate that mental load.
I love the idea of a yearly video to record where your child is at! And going to check out Mixtiles. My walls could use some love.
I also spent maternity leave trying to catch up on photo albums, but I’m still so behind. My problem is too much content to sift through- between me and my sisters (who take non-stop photos of my kids), there are just so many pictures to choose from! It definitely gets overwhelming and then I end up making an album that only covers like three months of the year 🙃
Oh I definitely hear that -- it's super overwhelming! I can share a bit about my process: as I take pictures here and there, I make sure to (in the moment) favorite the ones that are really the good ones/the ones I would want to put in an album. Then, when I actually go to make the album I basically just sift through my favorited photos and then add the photos I want to a new album on my phone titled with the album name (i.e. Beiser family 2023).
Once the album on my phone was compiled, it was so much easier to just upload the whole thing to the photo book software.
I went through pediatric residency- before having kids!
It's so interesting for me to see the other partner's perspective- during training, we are so focused on the hospital that it's so hard to see what life is like for anyone else on the outside.
I also counsel medical students on life planning, and fertility often comes up- there is no good time to plan out kids unless you already have them before or after medical school! I'd love your take on this and how we can better support medical trainees- especially female trainees who may be interested in a family one day. I'm so glad you have other family support - that's critical!
Many of my friends from medical school are now struggling with fertility post-residency. The stats for infertility are 1 in 8 for all women, but 1 in 4 for women in medicine :(
Thanks! I think I saw the idea on Instagram originally and put it in my back pocket until I had kids! It's been so fun. I ask just basic stuff -- where do we live, who are your friends, what's your favorite food, etc. Honestly, I want to make them for myself and my husband too! I think we'd love to look back on these for ourselves also. I'm getting sentimental just thinking about this haha

i feel SO SEEN ,THANK YOU!!
I am so happy to hear that this helped you feel seen!!! and YES to it all -- it's all encompassing and the overwhelm just never ends
Love! Ordered the parenting book :)

Thank you for this thoughtful comment! It’s so nice to hear that your kids enjoy the outcomes. Would love to hear more about your systems!

That's a great idea! I know people love those frames -- which one do you have? I feel like my 3 year old would be super into that actually
I have a Nixplay frame!

I like that idea!

Would love to hear which questions you use in the annual video! Such a great idea.
